Yesterday at 9:10 A.M., Madam President called to order a Special Sitting of the Senate in the National Assembly Chamber, Belmopan City. Senator Glenfield Dennison led the Belizean National Prayer, and Senator Kerm Thimbrel took the Oath of Allegiance as Temporary Senator on behalf of Senator Reverend Louis Wade Jr.

Madam President then announced appointments to the Sessional Select Committees under Standing Order 64.

The Leader of Government Business, Senator Eamon Courtenay, introduced THREE Government Bills:

  • Central Bank of Belize (Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • Bail Bill, 2025
  • Law Revision and Law Reform Bill, 2025

Two Motions were introduced and adopted:

  • Resolution to Support Democratic Taiwan and Strengthen Bilateral Bonds — carried unanimously, underscoring Belize’s steadfast support for Taiwan.
  • Motion to Nominate Members to the Joint Public Accounts Committee of the House of Representatives

Five Bills were read  a second time:

  • Customs and Excise Duties (Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • Insolvency and Bankruptcy Bill, 2025
  • Central Bank of Belize (Amendment) Bill, 2025
  • Bail Bill, 2025
  • Law Revision and Law Reform Bill, 2025

In Committee of the Whole:

  • Four Bills passed without amendment:
    • Central Bank of Belize (Amendment) Bill, 2025
    • Law Revision and Law Reform Bill, 2025
    • Customs and Excise Duties (Amendment) Bill, 2025
    • Insolvency and Bankruptcy Bill, 2025
  • Bail Bill, 2025 was withheld for further examination.
  • People’s Constitution Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2025 was passed with agreed amendments (the only measure amended by the Senate).

On the adjournment, Senator Janelle Chanona raised a matter of urgent national importance regarding poverty in Belize, urging targeted legislative action. Madam President then formally adjourned the Sitting at 6:22 P.M.
