Belmopan, Belize — On May 15, seven economics majors from Corozal Junior College made their way to Belmopan for an enriching visit to the National Assembly, which is currently housed at the George Price Centre due to ongoing renovations at its permanent location.
Accompanied by their lecturer, the students were welcomed for an educational tour that offered a closer look at the workings of Belize’s parliamentary system. As they explored the temporary chambers and surrounding areas, they gained a deeper understanding of the legislative process—from how laws are introduced and debated to how national policies are shaped.
The group engaged attentively throughout the visit, drawing connections between their academic studies and the real-world functions of governance. Discussions touched on the roles of elected officials, the structure of the Assembly, and the broader implications of public policy on national development.
A highlight of the visit came at the end, when two of the brilliant students confidently gave a short presentation summarizing what the group had learned. Their reflections not only showcased the key takeaways from the experience but also demonstrated the group’s strong grasp of the relationship between governance and economic decision-making.
Though small in number, the group’s enthusiasm and thoughtful engagement made a lasting impression. The visit offered valuable perspective, bringing theory into practice and encouraging future civic awareness. As the students returned to Corozal, they left with a stronger appreciation for Belize’s democratic institutions—and perhaps, a spark to one day help shape them.
