On Monday, 2nd February 2026, history unfolded at Independence Hill, Belmopan, as Belize marked a moment of national pride with a Special Sitting of the National Assembly, the State Visit of His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, and the official inauguration of the newly renovated National Assembly Building.

The day commenced at 9:15 a.m. with a sitting of the Senate. In a symbolic demonstration of unity and parliamentary tradition, Senators were subsequently invited to join the sitting of the House of Representatives, transforming the proceedings into a Joint Sitting of both Chambers.

With all Members assembled, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and his delegation were formally escorted into the Chamber. The Prime Minister of Belize, Honourable John Briceño, then rose to extend a warm and gracious welcome to the visiting Head of State. In his remarks, the Prime Minister declared the official re-opening of the renovated National Assembly Building and invited President Ali to address the National Assembly.

President Ali’s address underscored the enduring bonds of friendship, cooperation, and shared democratic values between Belize and Guyana, while highlighting opportunities for strengthened collaboration across key sectors.

The occasion stood as a powerful testament to Belize’s commitment to parliamentary democracy, regional solidarity, and institutional modernization, marking not only the renewal of a historic building, but also the continued strengthening of the nation’s democratic foundations.
